Clinician Well-being in the Face of Covid-19

Presenter:

Dr. Darrell G. Kirch is president emeritus of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), which represents the nation's medical schools, their teaching hospitals and health systems, and related academic societies. He served as AAMC president and CEO for 13 years until July 2019. Dr. Kirch currently is an adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He also serves as the principal of Academic Health Advising LLC, which focuses on advisory services for medical schools, their affiliated health systems, and their leadership. A distinguished educator, biomedical scientist, and clinician, Dr. Kirch speaks and publishes widely on the need for transformation in the nation’s health care system and how academic institutions can lead change across education, research, and health care for their communities and beyond. As a respected university leader, Dr. Kirch has chaired the Washington Higher Education Secretariat and served as a member of the American Council on Education Board of Directors. In 2007, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, and has been active in multiple initiatives of the National Academies. As an ardent champion for the well-being of the nation’s health professions workforce, he currently serves as co-chair of the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience. Dr. Kirch also is a member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Psychiatrists.

Effects of COVID-19 on Healthcare Workers and Physicians: Research and Consultant Findings

Presenter:
Liz Ferron is the physician practice lead for VITAL WorkLife and manages the organization’s Physician Well Being Resources solution and oversees all solutions for their healthcare clients. Liz provides training, consultation, counseling and coaching to healthcare administrators and individual practitioners in many areas, including stress management, change management and conflict resolution. She is a licensed independent clinical social worker and worked as a consultant for the Earl E. Bakken Center for Spirituality and Healing at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Kristin Tugman has been in the health and productivity consulting field for 20 years and currently heads up the Health and Productivity Analytics and Consulting Practice for Prudential group insurance products. The team is responsible for analyzing lost time for large employers and designing and implementing solutions to help them minimize absence and maximize productivity. She is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor. She has authored several publications pertaining to the psychological aspects of disability. Her work details a specific cognitive behavioral model to assist individuals in overcoming psychological barriers that prevent a return to productivity. Dr. Tugman continues to actively research and develop techniques to assist individuals with psychiatric and other disabilities in maintaining appropriate function in the competitive work force. She graduated from Georgia State University with a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling and earned a PhD in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Capella University.

Creating/Regaining Trust - How Medicus Integra Creates Structures of Trust and Communication

Presenter:
Dianne McCallister, MD, MBA is a physician leader with 20 years experience studying physician wellbeing and how organizations can create structures to help support the meaning and purpose that is central to the calling of physicians to practice medicine. Dianne is one of the co-founders of the Coalition for Physician Wellbeing, formed a decade ago, and speaks nationally and internationally on physician wellbeing, quality and medical topics. She is co-editor of the book, Transforming the Heart of Practice, A Personal and Organizational Approach to Physician Wellbeing. Dianne is owner of Diagnosis Well, Inc, and has served as Chief Medical Officer at several Denver area hospitals, which have received national recognition for quality and physician satisfaction scores under her leadership. Dianne and her husband reside in the Denver metro area.

When disaster strikes, Dr. Dan Diamond shows leaders how to rally their team to make a difference when it matters most. He was the Director of the Medical Triage Unit at the New Orleans Convention Center following Hurricane Katrina, led one of the first medical teams into Haiti following their devastating earthquake, and deployed to the Philippines following Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Dr. Diamond is the author of the book "Beyond Resilience: Trench-Tested Tools to Thrive Under Pressure". He has been seen on CNN, Anderson Cooper, and Larry King Live.

Grief and COVID-19: Can Healing and Hope Coexist?

Presenter:
Juleun A. Johnson, D.Min.  serves as Director of Mission and Ministry for the South Market of AdventHealth Central Florida which includes seven (7) Central Florida Campuses and Serves as Lead Chaplain of AdventHealth Celebration. He has served as a staff chaplain in cardiac and critical care at the AdventHealth Orlando Campus. On that campus he saw an average of two deaths per day. Prior to AdventHealth, he served as a parish pastor for 13 years in Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. His dissertation “Pastors as Caring Bridgebuilders in Healthcare Settings” focused on End of Life Care Education for African American Clergy and Community. He has served as a Doctoral Advisor at Denver Seminary and an adjunct professor at AdventHealth University. He is a member of the AdventHealth Executive Leadership Program. He is an author with articles in National and International Journals and Publications. He is the author of two books Five Minutes On Purpose and The Built To Thrive Discovery Guide.

Safeguarding Resilience and Curbing “Burnout Hysteria” During Uncontrollable Times

Presenter:
Wayne M. Sotile, Ph.D. is the founder of the Sotile Center for Resilience and the Center for Physician Resilience, in Davidson, North Carolina. He is an international thought leader on physician resilience and work/life balance for busy professionals. He consults widely with health care systems, teaching evidence-based strategies for deepening collaboration and collegiality and promoting engagement and resilience while coping with change. Dr. Sotile has published widely in the peer-reviewed medical literature, including featured articles in JAMA, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, World Neurosurgery, and, Clinical OBGYN. Dr. Sotile has authored or co-authored nine books, including The Resilient Physician (2002), The Thriving Physician: A Guide Combating Burnout Throughout Your Medical Career (with Gary Simonds, M.D., 2018), and Thriving in Healthcare: A Guide to Choosing Resilience Over Burnout in Your Busy Life (with Gary Simonds, M.D., 2019). Imposter Syndrome and Physician Burnout

Presenter: 
C. Nicole Swiner, MD was Voted 1 of 10 Best Doctors in NC, DocSwiner is a family physician, 6-time best-selling author, blogger, speaker, wife and mother in Durham. She is also affectionately known as the Superwoman Complex expert and has written 2 best-selling books on the topic. She loves taking care of the family as a whole—from the cradle to the grave. Her interests include Minority Health, Women’s Health, Self-Care and Female Entrepreneurship. She attended Duke University and went to medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, SC. She’s lived in the Triangle (Durham, NC) since finishing residency at UNC-Chapel Hill and continues teaching as an Adjunct Associate Professor with the Family Medicine department. Uncovering Hidden Sources of Strength and Resilience: Embodied Knowledge and Generative Workplaces

Melissa R. Peet, MSW PhD is the founder of the Generative Knowledge Institute. A Systems Approach to Clinician Wellbeing: The NAM Report

Presenter:
Christine K. Cassel is Senior Advisor for Strategy and Policy in the Department of Medicine at UCSF. She is working on bioethics related to science and technology frontiers in health care. From 2016-2018, Dr. Cassel was Planning Dean for the new Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. From 2013-2016 she was the President and CEO of the National Quality Forum and prior to that served as president and CEO of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the ABIM Foundation. Dr. Cassel was one of 20 scientists in the Obama administration President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). She was the co-chair of PCAST reports on health information technology, scientific innovation in drug development and evaluation, systems engineering in healthcare, technology to foster independence and quality of life in an aging population, and safe drinking water systems.
